Today, October 21st, would have been Carrie Fisher’s 63rd birthday. It’s been almost 3 years since she died and left a huge hole in the Star Wars universe.
I’ve always been a fan of Leia- in fact I had this poster above my bed as a child.
I have one distinct memory of meeting Carrie at a convention that I’d like to share.
I was at a big convention and Carrie was a headline guest. I got into the line to have my photo-op with her.She was, understandably, incredibly busy. The photo-op setup was the standard con version. Walk up, quick greeting, pose, snap and leave.
However, Carrie had other ideas! She was taking a bit longer to greet eveyone and to make it more personal which was a nice thing to do. This though annoyed the organisers- even more so when children came up for a photo as she would reach into her bag, pullout a 10×8, sign it and give it to them!
This annoyed them for two reasons. First, it really slowed down the line and secondly she was giving away free autographs instead of charging as she does at her desk in the autograph zone.
The person in charge was quiet vocal (and loud) when telling Carrie to stop. Her reaction to him was to look at him and then slowly give him the middle finger before ignoring him and getting on with meeting the guests. The people in the line applauded-no one minded the wait now!
When it came to my turn she pulled me in close for the below photo. I will always treasure it!
RIP and Happy Birthday Carrie- you are missed!
