Mary Sue noun
(originally in fan fiction) a type of female character who is depicted as unrealistically lacking in flaws or weaknesses.
“she was not a ‘strong woman’ so much as an insufferable Mary Sue”
Since ‘The Force Awakens was released, there has been a lot of people (mostly insecure men) who claim that Rey is a ‘Mary Sue’ going by the above definition.
I’ve thought long and hard. Most of their arguments are based on two things. Firstly they believe she has no faults or flaws and second that she seems very proficient in things she has had no training in (Lightsaber duelling, flying, mechanics etc).
They are only saying this because Rey is female. See below for some comparisons to one of the male heroes, Luke Skywalker. I chose Luke purely because when we first meet him he is of a similar age as Rey and no apparent Force training.
I have also added a comparison to one of the newer force-using characters, The Child (Yoda Baby) from ‘The Mandalorian’.
If these reasons aren’t enough to convince you that Rey IS NOT a Mary-Sue then I give up!
