A follow-up to 1984’s Ghostbusters and 1989’s Ghostbusters II has been in the works since 1989. Around 2011, the original team behind the original, began working on ideas for a second sequel. With the untimely death of Harold Ramis in 2014, everything was put on hold.
2016 saw a reboot, directed by Paul Feig and with an all-female main cast. It was called Ghostbusters- Answer The Call. It had such a promising cast in the most part. But unfortunately it suffered at the box office. I believe that a weak script with a predictable plot and forced-humour in part were a big part of the problem.
Post-2016 and Jason Reitman, son of original director Ivan Reitman, began working on a new story with the focus to be on the descendants of the original cast.
Finally, in January 2019 the new film, tentatively titled ‘Ghostbusters 3’ was announced. Since then, everything else apart from the cast has been kept under wraps.
The cast announced so far included Carrie Coon (Fargo & Avengers Infinity War), Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things/IT), McKenna Grace (Designated Survivor) and Paul Rudd (Ant Man).
Bill Murray (Dr Peter Venkman), Dan Aykroyd (Dr Ray Stantz), Annie Potts (Janine Melnitz), Sigourney Weaver (Dana Barrett) and Ernie Hudson (Winston Zeddemore) all reprise their roles from the original movie. Interestingly, on IMDB, Winston Zeddemore s listed as ‘Dr’. Maybe Winston went back to college and got his PhD?
The trailer for Ghostbusters 3, now titled ‘Ghostbusters Afterlife’ was released on December 9th 2019 with the film’s release date being July 2020. From first look at the trailer it seems to me that they are definitely looking to reinvigorate the franchise by, rightfully so, aiming at a younger audience, but also it looks like it could be a love-letter to the original films. The trailer is below.
To me this has already answered many of the questions I had about this film.
I originally thought that this film might be based around Oscar, Dana Barrett’s son. My thinking was that she married Peter Venkman who then adopted and raised Oscar as his own.
Based on a behind-the-scenes photo released a few backs ago, with McKenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard and purely on how they looked, my next theory was that they are descendants of Dr Egon Spengler, played by the late Harold Ramis.
The trailer has pretty much confirmed my second theory. In the trailer we find out that Callie (Carrie Coon) is the mother of Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) and Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and that they have been evicted from their home and are heading to an old farm that was left to them by their dead grandfather.
Phoebe is soon exploring the farm and barns where she comes across a ghost trap. Her science teacher Mr Grooberson (Paul Rudd) then explains to her and her classmates all about the Ghostbusters and the “Manhattan Crossrip of 1984” which many people seem to be unaware of. He even shows them “archive footage” online of the events in Central Park West.
We also see Phoebe searching through a hidden room where she comes across petri dishes and jars full of ‘Spores, molds and fungus’ exactly what Egon used to collect as a hobby. She also finds a Proton Pack and the Ghostbusters Jumpsuits hanging in a closet. The jumpsuit she pulls out reads ‘Spengler’ on the name-tag.
We then go through a very fast-paced montage of the film, including the discovery of ECTO-1 by Trevor, Slimer causing havoc in the streets, ECTO-1 with Trevor driving and Phoebe, wearing a proton pack, in a gunner seat chasing ghosts through the town.
In a scene at Callie’s house we also see ‘symmetrical book stacking… just like the Philadelphia mass turbulence of 1947’.
The final reveal leads me to think that Gozer the Gozerian, the bad-
guy spirit from the first film is back. We close up on Paul Rudd sitting in his car when a large clawed foot crashes down on the bonnet as he looks on in horror- the claw looks like that of a Terror Dog!
I believe that Callie is the daughter of Egon and Janine which makes Phoebe and Trevor their grand-kids. The photos below convince me even more. I’m prepared to be wrong though.
What can I say other than I’m excited! Roll on July 2020! As more news becomes available I’ll be sure to blog about it!
