The world lost another great footballer today. Jack Charlton, member of the 1966 World Cup winning squad and older brother of fellow footballer Sir Bobby Charlton died yesterday aged 85.
Jack had a great career as both a player and a manager with his playing career at Leeds United and managing teams including Middlesbrough and the Republic of Ireland National Team.
My memory actually links back to a convention I went to about 5 years ago and Jack was a last minute addition to their sports section signers.
My brother and his family hadn’t been to a con in a while and the three kids were all of an age where they could dress-up. My niece Jessica dressed up as Elsa from Frozen, my little nephew Lewis dressed up as Captain America and my nephew Charlie, the middle child, dressed up as Darth Vader.
Charlie took his role as the Dark Lord of the Sith very seriously- what 6 year old wouldn’t! He lead the way through the convention, making sure everyone got out of his way.
As we were walking through, we got to a bit of a bottleneck in the crowd. Charlie didn’t care, he just kept going, lightsaber in hand. Suddenly a voice boomed yelling “Stop, make way for Darth Vader, he’s evil and scary”. I looked up and Jack Charlton was stood there making sure that Darth Charlie (and us) got through and he was laughing and grinning all the time. Charlie had no idea who Jack was, I managed to mumble a thanks and he just laughed saying not to mess with Charlie. At this point I had to go and stop Charlie as he just kept going! My one regret is that I didn’t go back and get a photo with Charlie and Jack as it was too crowded.
RIP Jack, you will be missed!
