This will be a fairly short post. I see a lot of posts about Mental Health on Twitter and the things people do to help themselves. I, likely many people, have suffered with Mental Health issues for a long time but was afraid to do anything about it due to the stigma surrounding it so I learned to mask it. I have professional help though now which helps.
There are times though when your help isn’t around- it could be a day when you aren’t seeing your counsellor or your MH Nurse isn’t visiting. So what do you do? The best thing I have found is to try, and I use the word try as sometimes it doesn’t work, to keep my mind occupied. I have a number of things I do which help and which one I choose depends on my state of mind at the time.
My mental helpers are:-
- 3D modelling
- Updating my pin/pop collection or just my sci-fi collection in general.
- Working on this blog. I get a fair bit of traffic and comments etc, but I find just writing something really helps which is why I’ve started blogging about past shows, films, cons and collectables etc.
- Media- Immersing yourself in Music, TV or Film. It’s also quite common if you only watch or listen to things you already know as there can be no surprises to possibly trigger you. I do this- I only listen to my favourite music from the 80s and only watch Star Trek/Wars etc as I know them. I find it easy to watch new versions of Trek, like Picard, as its still Trek and its doubtful there would be something triggering- I know Trek.
I also remind myself that what I am going through and the things I’m feeling are ok and normal. I do that by looking at these images below which I’d like to share with every one.
I’d like to say thanks to my Star Trek Twitter friends for putting up with me and that includes some of the actors from Trek who have been very kind and friendly- a big shout-out needs to go to the amazing Samora Smallwood who I hope to see back on the Enterprise soon!
I’d also like to say thanks to the folks at Fansets who have helped feed my habit and been extremely helpful, funny and friendly at the same time.
Finally, without the following franchises I don’t know where I would be- a HUGE thanks to everyone involved in Star Trek, Star Wars, The MCU, Agents of SHIELD, Rizzoli & Isles and Death in Paradise- these are the things that keep me going and I pick up so many messages from them but that’s another post for another day.
PS- I lied about this being a short post, sorry. Got carried away!
