This Coronavirus Pandemic has almost ruined the convention season for this year. Most companies that I know of have sadly been affected and, in the UK at least, have had little to no support from the government. I imagine its true for other countries too.
Luckily, some companies have taken the initiative to hold ‘Virtual Cons’ online using Zoom or a similar platform. They all take a similar format in that there is a panel of guests who will all appear online together with someone from the company acting as moderator. Fans can chat with each other and submit questions to the panel. Some have even gone so far as to have online cosplay contests which takes a bit of prep in advance. Many also do competitions and giveaways. They all offer an autograph service, usually with a choice of images. One-to-one online chats with a guest of your choice is also something that is being offered. Prices vary, but the two I have had the most fun with are In-House Cons, run by Coolwater Productions and GalaxyCon Live.
So far I’ve taken part in a number of Star Trek panels, a Supergirl panel and a Six Million Dollar man and Bionic Woman panel.
Obviously they aren’t a replacement for in person cons, but in the current circumstances they are an excellent idea. I wonder how feasible it would be for these companies to keep doing virtual cons as well as in-person ones once the pandemic is over
Anyway, here are a few images from some of the panels. If you haven’t tried one yet, give it a go. I’ll put links at the bottom of the post.
One of my first was a Star Trek panel with In-House cons with a number of Trek guests. I had a one-to-one chat with Sara Mitich at the end. You can read about that one here.
My next event was a Supergirl Cast panel with GalaxyCon Live and included Nicole Maines, Jeremy Jordan, Helen Slater and Jesse Rath. This was a great panel to watch, with lots of insight as to what goes on behind the scenes.
I then took part in a Star Trek The Next Generation panel with Marina Sirtis, Denise Crosby, Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner. I must say I have not laughed like that for a very long time. It was great to watch!
I’m a huge fan of the 70s cult shows ‘The Six Million Dollar Man’ and ‘The Bionic Woman’. It was an absolute pleasure to see both Lee and Lindsay on screen and looking well. I’ve met Lee before but really want to meet Lindsay in person. GalaxyConLive have hopefully got me an autograph of each and I look forward to receiving them!
Last night I took part in another Coolwaters Production In-House con. Once again it was a Star Trek panel with Ronnie Rowe Jr, Jennifer Barlow, Damon Runyan and Jason Matthew Smith. Another great panel and the guests really bounced off of each others energy.
A big thanks to Ronnie Rowe Jr for answering my question which was “Who is the biggest prankster on the Discovery set?” His response was that there are many pranksters but the biggest of them all by far is Mary Wiseman!
If you haven’t took part in one yet, I can highly recommend it. You can find the two companies I have used here:-
I’ve got a few more planned over the next couple of months. More Star Trek ones, an X-Files panel and Doctor Who plus any more fun ones that pop up!
